Recently I have been driving my brother around in his car and have noticed how inconsiderate people are in parking in Disabled Parking Bays when not entitled. Mike my brother is a Blue Badge holder and has great difficulty walking any distance. This means a Disabled Parking Bay which is near to the point of access to a building is essential for him to get about. I have witnessed a number of occasions where able bodied people, in some cases even works vans and work men routinely pull up and park in a Disabled Bay.

Here is a short video from Youtube, albeit American which shows a classic example of this kind of thoughtlessness

Now interestingly having done some research and from October 2004, Part III of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 came into effect within the United Kingdom. This legislation places a legal requirement on service providers to ensure that disabled people do not find it unreasonably difficult or impossible to enjoy the service in the same way as non-disabled people.

Failure to provide monitoring could result in a heavy financial penalty, as disabled drivers exercise their rights to compensation under the terms of the Act.There are a number of requirements which apply to the provision of disabled parking bays. Bays should be within 50m of the entrance to a building, and should be lined or painted to make their presence clear.

Now I am no legal expert and you should not rely on anything I say here without your own research. However there is an obligation to provide monitoring of the service such as parking bays. Therefore next time you go to the Supermarket for example and see drivers abusing this facility complain to the management and remind them of their legal obligation to monitor the parking bays!

Now to be fair and balanced there is abuse by Blue badge Holders. The below link will if you copy and paste it into your browser will take you to a Youtube Video from Brent Council (they disabled the facility that would allow me to show it here) where they conduct an enforcement operation where you see perfectly able bodies people using the Blue Badge illegally to avoid paying parking charges. This in my view is an even worse abuse of the system as it totally devalues the importance of the disabled parking facility.

http://youtu.be/BB-XwR2YfkQ

Disabled Parking Bay Rage - Now some try to make light of this serious issue and make jokes like in the video below.

However if your reading this and have no personal experience or understanding of why this issue is important take a few moments to watch this Youtube video below.

By didbygraham from Flickr.com

Second hand mobility scooters can at first seem a cheap and viable solution to your mobility problems. The high price of new mobility scooters can often seem prohibitive to many buyers. You do however need to be careful in your choice of second hand mobility scooters. It is obvious you will need to have decided whether to purchase a 3 wheel mobility scooter, a 4 wheel mobility scooter or a folding mobility scooter.

This done you will be closely looking at prices. here are some factors to weigh in regard to second hand mobility scooters. look at the plastic or metal body panels and frames. look for chips, knock and obvious signs of a careless owner. If they have not looked after the visible bits then they have not looked after the important parts as well.

The battery should be a first concern, incorrect use and irregular charging can cause the battery to fail early in its life. research the make and model of mobility scooter battery and factor in a replacement in the negotiations of the price you pay to the seller. Check out the seat is functioning properly and is not split or damaged. Are the tyres worn or showing signs of splits? Check the steering tiller is functioning properly and have the scooter demonstrated in use by its owner if possible. if it is a folding scooter see the owner assemble and disassemble all the moving parts.

Once satisfied always negotiate a lower price to give you a buffer in case the unexpected happens just after you buy the scooter. If the seller is unhappy to do any of the above, walk away and find one who is - it could save a fortune for you in the future.

You'll be able to recharge your personal mobility scooter battery every single day, for somewhere between eight and 15 hours if you need to . The owner's guide will tell you exactly what the perfect charging program is for your personal mobility scooter For mobility applications you should use AGM or Gel batteries.
Where verbal communications are difficult OneVoice have developed this application for the Ipad which will assist many who are in this difficult position.

Whilst augmentative communication devices have been around for a long while cost have always been a restrictive factor in there use.

However the advent of the Ipad and this application tackles this head on.

The application is described as follows and you can view the full details at the developers website here One Voice

OneVoice is developed to be readily understood by all ages. No getting lost as you go too deep into multi-level categories, or losing track of exactly where words are. The straightforward interface does not demand hours of training to find words.

OneVoice is prepared to use straight away. Not having to setup or configure something. Though to obtain the most out of it you'll want to personalize the vocabulary.

OneVoice is Designed to be Personal.

The settings popover allows you to customize voice speed and choose between 4 top quality voices. Also from here it is possible to allow edit mode to modify or take away categories and words. All customization is completed directly on the iPad, without having needing a laptop.

Your Vocabulary.

Quite soon you are going to understand that the default vocabulary is limited for you. When that occurs turn on edit mode and begin personalizing. Add new categories, then generate phrases within any category. With every single phrase it is possible to decide on from our icon set or add your own pictures.

Use Your own Photographs.

You may bring photos from your pc onto the iPad to use in OneVoice. Also with Apple’s Camera Connection Kit you'll be able to plug your camera directly into the iPad and download pictures. Make it so a list of friends and family has photographs of every person!

You don’t have to only use the current words to construct sentences. At anytime you'll be able to tap the sentence box to add say something using the full keyboard.

Beginner & Advanced Modes

By default OneVoice will allow you to construct a full sentence, then press speak to hear it. The “Speak Each and every Word” setting changes that so that each and every word is spoken immediately. This is better for kids who may just press “bubbles” rather than trying to say “I would like to play with bubbles.”

To find out more visit the website one voice

Lightweight Folding Mobility Scooters can be the perfect solution to your mobility needs. Below is a video from Travelscoot.com where they demonstrate their latest lightweight travel scooter. In this video you can see how easy it is to remove from the car and assemble in the car park. The only accessory not provided is the cool box to act as a seat. One feature of this scooter is the folding trailing arm mechanism,When you press the spring-loaded locking pins, the trailing arms are released. This makes folding and storage so much more compact. In the video you see how easy it is to attach the front wheel by inserting it into the receptacle of the steering column. The spring snapper must lock into the corresponding hole. Once the trailing arms are released they can be unfolded as simple as an umbrella.

Once the handlebars ans seats are attached the battery is easily put into place and secured with velcro.

In use it appears to be lightweight and versatile. Lifting over kerbs is clearly easily demonstrated in the video. This travel scooter should be virtually maintenance free. There is one aspect of this promotion video that did cause me concern and that was the way the demonstrator attached luggage to the scooter and then towed a suitcase behind it. I took a look at the travelscoot website and downloaded the travelscoot pdf manual and it shows clearly the luggage stowage options. What it does also state is You should NOT tow anything behind the travelscoot.

Its manual states the following "You should not tow anything behind the TravelScoot. This could create additional leverage forces against the backrest with the potential of a tipping over backwards. If you tow something anyway (such as a wheeled suitcase), be aware that you can operate one brake only. Drive slowly and do not lean against the backrest"

So why show in the video someone at risk of falling backwards and only having one brake control?? I wonder how many customers will buy the scooter without taking the trouble to read the user manual?

Despite this it looks a really useful adaptable scooter.

You can visit travelscooter.com here and the user manual here

The Hardest hit march took place in London on the 11th May and was reported on by the BBC. The video below shows the news coverage of the march. Many people would have liked to have been present but their disability prevented them. The protest was against the proposed reforms of the benefit system including the disability living allowance which some claim will drive many more people with disabilities into poverty.

Those protesting fear they are to be the hardest hit. They claim cuts to local services as well as welfare reform are making their lives impossible. Graham Gray is interviewed and outlines how he has lost some of his support and how that now affects him. Ellie Southwood who is blind explains how a cut to a scheme which helps her at work now impacts upon her life.

Allowances affected include Disability living allowance, Employment And Support Allowance, Independent Living Fund, Social Fund and Community Care Grants, Access To Legal Aid and the list goes on. Jaspal Dhani of the UK Disabled People's Council is interviewed and outlines his concerns over the impact of these proposed and actual changes.

The Government however maintains that people with real needs will be protected. There is no doubt the system needs to be improved but cuts are going to be resisted.

Get some help with choosing the right mobility scooter for you. Listen to an expert from Pride Mobility Scooters take you through the choices open to you.

Watch this regional sales coordinator for Pride Mobility Scooters set out how to choose the right mobility scooter for you. She states Pride scooters are especially designed with the clients lifestyle in mind. She shows off the Pride Scooter range from compact models to the huge all terrain model. She has a point about all the confusing scooter adds you will see today and she tries to clarify this issue. The first place to start is with your own needs. Where are you intending to use the scooter, what is the terrain like around your home. Do you have to transport the scooter? Will you be using it to move around indoors as this clearly affects the size of the scooter? How far do you intend to travel on your scooter, just around the garden or down the road to the shops?

The distance you travel will determine the size of the mobility scooter battery you will need on your scooter and therefore the greater the distance to travel the larger the battery needs to be. If you intend to take the scooter to different locations you will need a light weight folding mobility scooter which you or your care giver can fold down like an umbrella and put into the boot. Your body size will also be a factor. How much time you will spend in the scooter will affect your decision on the kind of seat you will need. Do you need a 3 wheel or a 4 wheel scooter
